The Batteries required in a system, are of the Off Grid Type called ( Deep Cycle ). At no time should a automobile battery be used, as it will not live long under this type of use and you will be without batteries. AGM Called Absorbed Glass Mat Batteries Require very little maintenance when compared to Lead Acid Type Deep Cycle Batteries, but lead acid batteries last longer when maintained properly and are also designed to be discharged by a total of 30 % at a maximum charge , during each charge cycle. This means you will have to size the power input ( your Solar, Wind, or Fuel Driven Generator ) and the power storage device's ( Battery's, or Super Capacitors etc. ) to operate within this 1/3 or 30% range.
The best battery is a Nickel Iron Ni/Fe battery as they can be drawn down by 50% or more without harm. They are a heavier battery, normally used on shore on a solid floor system, coming in a 1.2 volt size, thus a 12 volt system requires 10 batteries of this size. Amperage can range , we find the 100 , 200 and 300 amp size in 1.2 volts most useful. The best operational systems are 48 volt systems, thus more batteries are needed to hold this amount of voltage at the ready. Ni/Fe batteries can be discharged further down without harming the battery than other battery types and many have been found that lasted 50 years by way of proper maintenance. They also cost more than other common batteries, but the longevity makes up for this greater cost.
The Charge Controller is a device that regulates the power from a given source, so you won't over charge your batteries.
A Power Diverting device is also recommended to be connected to the controller, so any power that comes from a solar array or wind turbine, that is more than the batteries require, can be used profitably in for example, a water heater element keeping your domestic water tank warm. A fail safe device such as a light string can also use up any further over powering, of the battery bank, and is also often used to safe guard the batteries from any possible over charging as a back up diverting device, thus protecting the batteries.
The Solar Array ( P/V panel or Photo Voltaic panels ) is as said above, sized to supply the battery bank's needs, as that the batteries must be energized with new power each day or sometime after a discharge to keep them at the ready. If 50% is drawn down, the energy supply formula your working with, will have to match this.
If the use daily is 20 KW ( that's 20,000 watts of power drawn ) you would need at the least a 40 KW battery bank. Often that is far too expensive of a battery bank to afford and the solar system needed for that size would also be far too expensive to afford when compared to conventional utility power prices. The Pros and Cons of Monocrystalline v/s Polycrystalline Solar

Because of lower silicon purity, polycrystalline solar panels
are not as efficient as monocrystalline solar panels, which give
lower space-efficiencies. With the former you generally need to cover a larger surface, to output the same electrical power as you
would with a solar panel made of monocrystalline silicon.
There are 3 types of technology utilized in the solar panels
available on the market today, these are
1) Thin film amorphous,
Thin film is a totally different technology designed mostly
for removal and replacement without easy damage - as in
camping etc.. It's a much less efficient type of panel and
therefore it uses much more space to accomplish its work.
Thin film has 2 advantages, that it performs better in low
light conditions, as when there is partial shading of the system
or in extreme heat conditions. This not for residential
or commercial power production.
Next, Monocrystalline & Polycrystalline which
are the both types of solar cells that are made from
a form of crystalline silicon. Most quotes you for solar
panels for your home will use crystalline solar panels.
Years ago the only type of solar panel widely used in
residential solar installations in the USA were
monocrystalline solar panels. In the last several years
polycrystalline solar panels, have become the most
commonly used solar panels in residential solar
installations in America due to their lower production cost.

"Mono or Poly" panels.
